Photo Of The Day - 362 of 365. Old Toys.
With all the new toys, I was surprised at how they wanted this 2 year old trampoline blown up. Sometimes the old toys are the favorites.
Photo Of The Day - 360 of 365. The Stool.
Here she is on the stool so she can reach the third floor.
please excuse the Christmas clutter!
Photo Of The Day - 359 of 365. Christmas Day.
She loved the new dollhouse. I snapped this shot so you could see just how big it is. She has a stool to stand on to reach the top floor comfortably!!

Photo Of The Day - 356 of 365. Camera Key Chain.
Shallow DOF.
I found this key chain at Bed Bath and Beyond last night and had to have it. The flash goes off but that's all it does. Had to have it.
I really like using the widest aperture I can most of the time. I'm a big fan of shallow DOF as you can tell from most of my photos. A long focal length can really add to the effect as well. This shot is at 270mm and f/6.3 which is the widest that particular lens will go. I do like the effect though.

Photo Of The Day - 355 of 365. Shortcake Cookies. B&W.
Today is black and white. I took several today but these shortbread cookies that my wife made look the best of all I think. Probably because they are so tasty. I have them on a black binder that dropped out of sight so nicely leaving the cookies floating on a sea of blackness.
Here are some other examples from the day.
Photo A Day For 2010 And Themes.
One thing I'm going to do in 2010 is continue to participate with the photo a day group I'm in but I'm going to do a theme each day. My thought here is a bit more focus (pun intended) to my photos. I tend to snap just any old thing when I'm feeling non creative. I hope this will help me a bit.
Here are my daily themes that I hope will help me to be a bit more creative.
Monday - Black and White. Because it fits the mood on most Mondays. I'm not very colorful on a Monday.
Tuesday - Shallow Depth Of Field. Because my focus on Tuesdays is very short sighted.
Wednesday - Bokeh. Mostly because I like it and most groups on Flickr do this on Wednesdays.
Thursday - Everyday items. Artsy shots of the mundane.
Friday - Colors. Full and vibrant. Just the way I feel on a Friday.
Saturday - Family fun. My weekends are for family. We like to have fun when we can.
Sunday - Family fun. Just like Saturdays.
That's it. Pretty simple. Lots of room each day to be creative.
I'll be posting my photos to my Flickr stream as ususal but also expanding on the blog post for that photo with other examples from the day.

Photo Of The Day - 354 of 365. Ready, Set, JUMP!
It occured to me that I have no photos of our new basement. We've been in the new house for 6 months now and this is the first time I've taken photos of the kids playing in the basement. Odd. Oh well, it was fun.
Photo Of The Day - 353 of 365. Christmas Baking.
My wife was baking up a storm today. These Butter Tarts, Shortbread Cookies, Eatmore Bars, Peanut Brittle. MMMMMMM. I can feel my waist getting bigger.

Photo Of The Day - 352 of 365. Cuddly Gift.
Santa comes to visit us here at work and many bring their kids to see him. We always have gifts for Santa to give them. This puppy (3 feet high) is one such toy. Fun times.

Photo Of The Day - 351 of 365. Chocolates.
Gotta love it when customers drop off chocolates for Christmas. Purdy's to boot. Yummm.

Photo Of The Day - 350 of 365. Calibrate.
My photos have been a bit off lately so after much deliberation it was decided that I should pick up a calibration unit. I went for the Spyder 3 Pro as you can see here. I calibrated my laptop right away and my display was too bright. Now the colors look so much better. I can't believe the difference. I can't wait to do my monitors at work.

Decisions, Decisions.
What would get used more, the Alien Bees lighting kit I've been looking at or the iPhone 3GS. Hmmmmmm. Decisions, Decisions.
Stay tuned.
Chris.
Photo Of The Day - 349 of 365. Dollhouse In My Office.
Yes, there is a dollhouse in my office. Before you get the wrong idea, no it is not mine. It's for my daughter for Christmas. I brought it to work to put it together so it can be fully assembled and ready to play with the minute she opens it.
And to answer the next question, you bet I'm getting teased about it. Wait till I bring the Barbies to put in it. LOL.

Christmas Photos And Studio Strobe Thoughts.
I'm pretty happy with the results here but I have such a small umbrella that I need to have it no more than 2 feet away from my subject. With most people that is pretty much invading their personal space never mind how a kid feels about that.
I've been giving some thought to Alien Bees B400's. They come in a kit with 2 lights, stands, 48" umbrellas, cables and carrying bags. For less than that iPhone that I want too! I'm going to give it more thought over the next few weeks and see what I decide then.
What The Duck Hit The Nail On The Head With This One.
Check out What The Duck. Nothing like a bunch of photographer ducks to show us how it really is!

Ok Mother Nature, you've made your point. You can make it really cold. Enough now.

Photo Of The Day - 346 of 365. Heat That Garage.
I've been insulating the garage slowly over the last couple of months. Now that it is -32C, I'm in a hurry. LOL.
This forced air kerosene heater is amazing. It went from -9 to +5 in 15 minutes. Of course the garage is 95% insulated so that is helping to hold the heat.
I just liked how the heat plate in the unit glows red hot instead of just a flame coming out the front which would be a bit scarry in my cluttered garage.

Photo Of The Day - 344 of 365. Concert Madness.
This is my son at the tail end of his Christmas Concert last night. It is my favorite photo from the night. He is still, happy and full of joy while the kids around him are bursting at the seams with energy. I was so impressed with his confidence and attitude last night. I've never seen him interacting with his classmates. He is showing leadership skills already.
It was such a fun event and he had so much fun doing it. What a great experience for him.
I'm so very proud of my Little Man, my Minni Me.

Sometimes A Photo Goes Way Beyond Words.
She loves to dance. She loves music.
A friend loaned me Matt Andersen's Live at the Pheonix Theater, a blues album and I was listening to it while the kids were horsing around. She stopped dead in her tracks and started to sway and dance all over the living room.
One song in particular, When My Angel Gets The Blues, had her in it's spell. I played it once, then twice, then a third time as she asked for the song again and again. The fourth time was a dance with daddy that had me smiling from ear to ear the whole five plus minutes of the song.
I love this little girl so much.
While this is not the best photo I have ever taken, it moves me beyond words as I recall the smile on her face and the concentration as she was lost in the music. And isn't that what it's all about.

Photo Of The Day - 341 of 365. Crisp Winter Morning.
There is something about the frigid Alberta weather that just makes photos look even better than usual. The crisp -27C temps take so much of the haze out of the air and the low sun makes for some really nice light.
This photo has only had some very minor adjustments to the raw file. A little sharpening and such.

Photo Of The Day - 339 of 365. Seriously?!
I'm not one to complain about snow. Well not in December anyway. I really like snow. I love to play in it still even as a "mature" adult. But come on Mother Nature. Did you have to give us all the snow for the year in one big dump? Seriously, you can stop now for a while. Christmas will be white.
Just to point out, that pile in the front here is about 3 feet high!

Early morning sun lights up the steam rising from a nearby refinery.
One of the better parts of -12C.

Photo Of The Day - 334 of 365. Industrial Alphabet - I, Impact Socket.
Continuing with my Industrial Alphabet we have an Impact Socket that is used on the Air Impact Wrench behind it.
Google Maps, Geotagging and Flickr Sets.
I thought, wow, what a great idea that is but I'm taking it a little further. I'm going to create some private maps and link from that map to the set of photos from that location on Flickr.
For example, here is a link to a location I shoot at all summer. Fork Lake, Alberta. The link brings up the google map I've created with a pin on it. Click on the pin and it opens up the data for that pin. In that data I've put a link to the set of photos for that location on Flickr. You can do multiple links to different sets so if you return there often you can see the changes throughout the sets.
In the future, I'll try to include the location for each photo in the exif and it will link back to the associated pin on the associated map. Round and round it goes.
For now, I'm using private maps but I may create public maps that will drive some people to my Flickr stream.
Chris.

Photo Of The Day - 333 of 365. Christmas Bell.
The tree is all decorated. I really liked how the window light lit up this bell ornament.

Photo Of The Day - 330 of 365. Industrial Alphabet - Goggles, Safety Goggles.
New safety goggles that allow me to put prescription lenses in them. They go into the metal frame which hangs just behind the lenses of the goggles. No more of the ugly huge ones that go over my glasses!!

Photo Of The Day - 329 of 365. Wash Boy.
Sometimes you just have to get under the truck to get it really clean.
These trucks come back from oilfield sites barely recognizable. Basically a mud ball with wheels. To prevent as much wear and tear as possible, all the mud must be removed.
Hot, wet, dirty job.

Photo Of The Day - 326 of 365 2009. Snow Man.
I put the air filled Snow Man and Tree up today. Gotta love those air decorations. They fit into such a nice small box.
Here he is once it got dark.
