Photos Of Fire

I love taking photos of the fire in the fire pit at the lake. I set myself up with a fast lens, usually my 50mm f/1.8 and a higher ISO so I can get a really fast shutter speed to freeze the flames. Quite often you get some really interesting shapes and designs in the flames. Sometimes you will see a face here and there or snakes or dragons. As long as you look at them in a small size you can still see that shape but usually if you blow it up to say 8x10 or so, you will lose that shape to the holes in the flame that created it in the first place.

But every now and then you will get one like the photo below. See the dog on the right side just above the middle. That face stays there no matter how large I look at it. The really creepy part is that the image looks just like our family dog. You can see a recent photo of her here. We have always wondered why she is so afraid of fire and then she shows up in a photo of flames. If I were superstitious, I would read all kinds of things into this. :)

Next time I plan fire photos, I'm going to wonder what the next winning lotto ticket numbers are!

Started From Scratch

As I've noted in a previous post I was very unhappy with the portraits of my kids I did out at the lake this summer. Of course I waited too long to do them and the day felt rushed and so on and so on.

What I did was take the photos in lightroom, reset them completely and worked them a bit from the beginning. I'm happier with the results now and I think I'll let it go and just be glad that I have something from the rock at the lake this year. Sometimes you just need to accept your own failings and move on.

All in all, I think they look good enough to print. There's a project for the weekend.

You may recognize this location from my summer photos at the lake. Why not a winter portrait on the rock?

There is nothing quite like being out at the lake. Even in the winter. All one needs to do is dress for it and the fun is the same.

252.365 Discipline.

252.365 Discipline.Friday September 9 2011.

What you see here is an example of how to discipline your kids. LOL. You just got to show them who's boss. Otherwise they will just jump all over you. LOL.

Try to take me on will they.......Good luck. :)

A special thanks to my wife for snapping some shots of me and the kids wrestling.

251.365 Last Lake Portrait

251.365 Last Lake PortraitThursday September 8 2011.

This is the last lake portrait for the girl this year. We are all done and we have winterized our trailer. Maybe we will make it out there this winter for some skating on the lake and a cold winter fire but I doubt there will be a short sleeved portrait. :)

249.365 Mohawk.Tuesday September 6 2011

This is Bella. My parents dog. She has the best mohawk of any dog out there. I think I'll try to talk my parents into gelling her hair up and I'll bring my lighting kit over! That would be some awesome portraits.

248.365 Sharps

248.365 SharpsMonday August 5 2011.

I'm a great person to go to the beach with. If there is a sharp item in the lake, I'll step on it before you can! Every year I find something to step on. At least once. This time it was a broken beer bottle. Given that this is a stubby bottle, I'm sure it's been there a long time. I've not seen a stubby bottle in many many years.

Odd part is this was right by our dock that we run and play around all the time. My son stepped on it first and cut his foot but not as bad as me. Kids heal so quickly! I'm still hobbling around on a sore foot.

247.365 Thoughts Of Fall.

247.365 Thoughts Of Fall.Sunday August 4 2011.

My wife, deep in thought about the sadness of our last weekend at the lake. Fall has arrived which means skating lessons, swimming lessons and dance class for the kids. I'm sad to see the lake season end too.

246.365 Misty Lake.

246.365 Misty Lake.Saturday August 3 2011.

It's that time of year where the air cools so quickly during the night. The lake still holds the day's heat and gives us this great mist. If you get up early enough to see it.

240.365 Storm Clouds.

240.365 Storm Clouds. Explored!

The craziest storm crossed the far side of the lake. In the setting sun the slowly spinning lead edge took on an surreal glow as the storm passed by.

239.365 Family Portrait 2011.

Saturday August 27 2011.

Every year for the last 7 years we have done a family portrait on this rock that I dug out from the bottom of the lake about 6 feet under water. The kids have really grown over the years. I remember when they could not touch the ground below the rock!

Here is this years family portrait. I'm quite happy with how this one turned out. It's going to look good on the wall.

I'm sure Alice was just here. She took a bite out of that mushroom and shrunk out of my site. LOL.

This reminded me of Alice In Wonderland obviously. :)

Storm Clouds Fork Lake July 9 2011 - HDR

Sunday July 10 2011.

We had some very cool stormy clouds that really screamed HDR to me. The detail in the clouds and the stones on the road just popped in the processed image.
