Luck Favors The Prepared

Every time I hear that luck favors the prepared I roll my eyes and think that sounds like something someone who just got lucky would say.

Well I happened to get lucky.

During dinner with my in-laws last Saturday evening, I spotted my neighbor on her deck with her camera pointed at the sky. I've never seen her out with her camera before, heck, I didn't even know she owned a camera. So, being the opportunistic photographer I am, I grabbed my camera and stepped out onto my own deck. The above photo is what I was greeted with.

The sun was almost down and a nasty fall storm was rolling in. Really nasty, hail, lightning and thunder with some pretty nasty winds. Of course I snapped several shots. This was my favorite of the bunch. Such amazing color on the  sky.

So, luck favors the prepared. Always and I mean always keep your camera out and ready to go. You never know what's going to come your way.

Morris Fighting The Snow.

Morris. My co worker Morris trying to find his work truck under all that snow. Yes, it's really that white out again.

Now this is a bit more creative. I've been giving some thought to what I'd like to photograph but still not sure if I want to pick one style over another. I like people photos but I still like the nature and wildlife stuff.

321.365 Piling Up.

321.365 Piling Up.

Thursday November 17 2011.

Our first real snow storm of the season. It's been coming down since about 7am. Not too hard but enough to start piling up in little drifts from the wind.

This is about a foot deep so far.

246.365 Misty Lake.

246.365 Misty Lake.Saturday August 3 2011.

It's that time of year where the air cools so quickly during the night. The lake still holds the day's heat and gives us this great mist. If you get up early enough to see it.

240.365 Storm Clouds.

240.365 Storm Clouds. Explored!

The craziest storm crossed the far side of the lake. In the setting sun the slowly spinning lead edge took on an surreal glow as the storm passed by.

Storm Clouds Fork Lake July 9 2011 - HDR

Sunday July 10 2011.

We had some very cool stormy clouds that really screamed HDR to me. The detail in the clouds and the stones on the road just popped in the processed image.

190.365 Summer Rain.

190.365 Summer Rain.

Saturday July 9 2011.

Sometimes it's nice to have a rainy day at the lake. We can just sit in my in-law's cottage and watch the rain come down.

I was really captured by the rain hitting the top of this table. I must have sat there watching it for an hour. I'm glad I was able to capture the streaking rain drops and the resulting splashes.

31.365 I'd Rather Have The Snow!

Monday January 31 2011.

Looked at the thermometer at 6:01 AM as I was getting a coffee. This is the temp I saw! -34.3C! Seriously?! Give me back the snow and -20. It's alright, I'll shovel.

26.365 Rain In January.

26.365 Rain In January.

Wednesday January 26 2011.

Sure, rain in January may not be uncommon but in Edmonton it's a nightmare. The drive to work was a thrill a minute as cars slid this way and that! I sure hope it dries up a bit before the cold comes back on the weekend.

8.365 Garage Snow Removal.

8.365 Garage Snow Removal.

Saturday January 8 2011.

Ok, I know it snowed pretty heavy here in the last couple of days but this is a bit much. The snow on the garage roof wasn't that deep. Maybe he will do the house right away too. I don't see a hazard from it falling either. I guess he just wanted to play on the roof. :)

228.365 Hail Hail Go Away........

Monday August 16 2010.

I'm glad I waited to do a photo for the day. Look at it come down! This is the first hail storm I've been in this year. Nothing too serious. Pea sized. But man was it coming down for a while there!

194.365 Local Flooding.

Tuesday July 13 2010.

So we had lots of rain in the last 24 hours. Lots. 2 inches or so. That made for some neat flood shots!

193.365 Storms All Around.

Monday July 12 2010.

This is a photo of my monitor. As you can see by the radar, we have some very active weather surrounding Edmonton right now. I hope it holds off long enough for me to get home and put my camera on my tripod for some lightening shots!

190.365 Mid Morning Thunder Storm

Friday July 9 2010.

I was watching this storm coming towards my office this morning and was about to head up to the roof for some shots of it when a huge bolt of lightning shot out. I changed my mind.

Instead I opted for some out the window shots where I am safer from lightning strikes! Pleas excuse the reflections on the window glass.

I put my circular polarizer on and tuned in some extra darkness so I could drop my shutter speed down. As it is even with f/22 I was only able to get it down to 1/10 of a second. I popped off 183 photos in total and only got 3 with lightning. Pretty good for only 1/10 of a second exposures. The best part of July is the thunder storms. I hope I can get far enough away from some this summer to get some great lightning shots.

Here are the other two I managed to get.

150.365 End Of May?

Sunday May 30 2010.

Really?! Come on. At the end of May?! LOL.

How could I not make a snow man? I should put him in a freezer bag then into the deep freeze!
